History and meaning

Opened in July 2022, this park represents a tribute to Torrevieja's large Cape Verdean community. It was created in recognition of the former Cape Verdean miners who settled in the city after working in Asturias and León. A symbolic mango tree was planted during the opening ceremony, with the collaboration of the Cape Verdean Cultural Association founded in 2019 by Alcides Almeida.

Location and access

Cabo Verde Park is located on Veleta Street in Los Altos residential area of Torrevieja. It is located in the southern part of the city, near the University Hospital and several residential developments. To get there by car, it is easily accessible via the CV-95 highway, while public transport requires the D-F line. It is also accessible on foot or by bicycle from nearby residential areas.

Features and services

The park offers garden areas with tropical plants such as mango and palm trees, grassy areas, and a small children's area with swings and rubber flooring. It has pedestrian paths and benches for resting, although it lacks amenities such as public restrooms or water fountains.

The park hosted important anniversary celebrations in 2023 and 2024, featuring live concerts by Cape Verdean artists (such as Dora Helena and Vox D'Afrika), traditional food tastings, and a multicultural atmosphere. These events were well-attended by local residents and reinforced the intercultural nature of the space.

Schedules and recommendations

Access to the park is free 24 hours a day, although daytime visits are recommended due to limited lighting at night. It's an ideal space for families with children and those interested in interculturality, although some residents point out that it could use better maintenance and more shaded areas.

Cabo Verde Park represents an example of cultural integration and neighborhood coexistence in Torrevieja. Through its design and activities, it preserves the legacy of the Cape Verdean community in the city, providing a meeting space that combines green areas with historical and social value. Although relatively small, its significance transcends its size as a symbol of Torrevieja's diversity.
