History: from train station to urban park

The Station Park (Parque de la estación) traces its roots back to the old narrow-gauge railway that connected Albatera with Torrevieja, popularly known as "La Panderola." This railway line, inaugurated in 1884, was built primarily to transport salt from the famous Torrevieja salt mines to the port of Alicante, from where it was exported to other countries. Torrevieja Station thus became a key hub for the local economy for decades.

Throughout the 20th century, salt transport generated tensions among the local population, as the people of Torrevieja depended heavily on the salt industry. After numerous neighborhood protests, salt transport was diverted to the port of Torrevieja. During the construction of the port, temporary branch lines were installed to transport construction materials from the Albatera quarries, but these were dismantled once the works were completed. With the opening of the new port, the decline of this railway line began.

The railway finally ceased operations in 1970, leaving the station and its surroundings unused. Over the years, the former railway complex was transformed into a public park that preserves elements of its industrial past. A section of the original tracks was retained as a historical testament, and the space was adapted to become an outdoor leisure and sports area.

Location and access

Station Park is located in the heart of Torrevieja, specifically in the area known as El Acequión, next to Station Avenue and very close to Doña Sinforosa Park.

It can be easily reached on foot from the center of Torrevieja (about 10-15 minutes from Plaza de la Constitución) or by city bus; lines A, C, D-F, or G stop less than 200 meters from the park. For those arriving by car, parking is available on the surrounding streets, although during peak hours it can be difficult to find a space. The park has entrances on all sides, all of which are accessible for people with reduced mobility.

Facilities and services

Skate park

The park's main attraction is its large concrete skate park, which features various elements such as spines, curves, railings, and inclined planes. It's frequented by the Torrevieja Skating Club, which organizes regular skate park get-togethers.

Green areas

Beyond sports activities, the park offers large green areas with well-maintained lawns where visitors can relax. The abundant trees provide pleasant shade, while the numerous strategically placed benches invite rest and contemplation. One of the park's most unique attractions are the chickens and roosters that roam freely throughout the grounds, adding an unexpected rural touch in the heart of an urban setting.

Other services

The park offers several practical amenities. A kiosk opens its doors in the afternoons offering refreshments and snacks, while drinking fountains ensure hydration on hot days. Families have access to a playground that, although showing some wear and tear, maintains basic safety conditions. The park also includes trash cans located throughout the perimeter and public restrooms, which, unfortunately, are frequently closed.

Historical and cultural elements

Railway heritage

The park preserves a section of the old railway track of the Albatera-Torrevieja branch line, which closed in 1970. This railway was originally used to transport salt from the local salt mines to the port of Alicante.

“Los Aljibes” Exhibition Hall in the Station Park

Located within the Parque de la Estación grounds, the exhibition hall occupies what was once the main building of the old Torrevieja railway station. This cultural space is perfectly adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Visiting hours are structured in two daily shifts: from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays. For specific information about the exhibitions, please call the official number 966 70 68 38.

The hall hosts a varied exhibition program that changes periodically, especially highlighting the static naval modeling displays, such as the 20th Naval Modeling and Radio Control Exhibition held in April 2025. In addition, photographic collections and works by local artists that reflect Torrevieja's cultural heritage are periodically presented.

Events and activities

Since 2023, the park has hosted the annual May Fair (May 9-12), featuring Andalusian-style stalls, dance studio performances, and live music. Occasional food markets and other cultural events are also held.

Within the park grounds is a curious miniature reproduction of Oviedo's San Salvador Cathedral, a symbolic element commemorating the twinning of the cities of Torrevieja and Oviedo. This model, which reproduces the main architectural elements of the Asturian Gothic temple, is complemented by an explanatory plaque that recalls the historical and cultural ties between the two cities, particularly highlighting the emotional bond created by the large Asturian community residing in Torrevieja.

Schedules and recommendations

The park is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with special hours when there is an event.

Enjoy the sunset in the park. When the clock strikes 8:00 p.m., the park transforms into a magical spot. The sunlight softens, painting the surroundings in warm, golden tones, making Station Park one of the best places to watch the sunset in the city.
