The Molino del Agua Park is one of Torrevieja's most iconic natural spaces, located between the city and the district of La Mata. Covering 17,000 square meters, this site acts as an ecological corridor between the Santa Pola Salt Flats and the La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Natural Park, forming part of a protected natural system of great environmental value.

History and Origin of the Name

The park takes its name from an old 19th-century water mill used to grind grain and process the salt extracted from the Torrevieja salt flats. Today, an exact replica of this mill can be seen in the park's main square, which occupies approximately 5,000 square meters.

In 2009, a fire destroyed approximately 1,500 square meters of vegetation, but thanks to regeneration projects, the park has fully recovered and is now one of Torrevieja's main green spaces.

Location and access

The Parque del Molino de Agua is located in the municipality of Torrevieja, between the urban center and the hamlet of La Mata, right next to the promenade and very close to La Mata beach (about 450m from the main access).

The most convenient way to get there is by car from the center of Torrevieja, a journey of just 10 minutes. Parking next to the park is free and usually available. If you prefer public transport, bus lines A and A2 stop just 300–500 meters away (Calle Morera or Parquemar), leaving the main entrance a 5–7-minute walk away. You can also get there on foot from La Mata Beach, enjoying a pleasant walk along the sea and the dunes, a highly recommended walk for its scenic beauty.

Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Molino del Agua Park is notable for its fossil dune system, a geological phenomenon of great interest. These dunes are divided into several zones based on their proximity to the sea and their degree of fixation:

Embryonic Dunes

Located along the coast, they contain species such as the seagrass (Agropyron junceum) and the seabell (Calystegia soldanella).

Moving Dunes

Characterized by the constant movement of the sand, plants such as the sand palm (Ammophila arenaria) and the sea lily (Pancratium maritimum) grow here.

Interdune troughs

More protected areas where species such as the sea madder (Crucianella maritima) and the everlasting flower (Helichrysum stoechas) thrive.

Fixed Dunes

Stabilized by vegetation, the predominant trees are Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis) and stone pines (Pinus pinea), adapted to the conditions of the terrain.

As for wildlife, the park is home to birds such as the common tern and the yellow-legged gull, as well as small mammals such as squirrels. Invertebrates, especially beetles, are abundant in the sandy areas.

Beneath the park are more than 500 m of underground galleries containing ancient aquifers that fed the original mill. A geological secret!

Route and Points of Interest

The park features a network of trails and wooden walkways that allow you to explore its expanse in a comfortable and environmentally friendly way.

Main Square and Mill

The main entrance leads to a large square where a replica of the water mill is located. This area also features a playground and a boat-style restaurant, an ideal starting point for your visit.

Creek Trail

A well-marked path that follows the course of a stream and ends at an artificial lake with a striking central jet of water.

Maritime Footbridge

This wooden structure runs along the entire coastline, offering panoramic views of the dunes and the Mediterranean. It's especially recommended at sunset.

Rest Areas

Benches and picnic areas are distributed throughout the park, allowing you to take breaks to enjoy the surroundings or even organize a picnic under the shade of the pine trees.

Recommendations for the Visit

To fully enjoy your visit to Molino del Agua Park, we suggest planning your trip during the spring or fall months, when temperatures are more pleasant and the vegetation is at its best. If you visit the park in summer, try to avoid the hottest hours of the day. Don't forget sunscreen and plenty of water.

For photography lovers, the fossil dunes and the artificial lake offer unique opportunities to capture spectacular images, especially with the windmill in the background. The park is one of the best places to watch the sunrise, as the sunlight rising over the Mediterranean creates an especially beautiful setting over the dunes and the sea. Remember that leaving the marked trails is prohibited to protect the fragile dune ecosystem, and keeping pets off leash is prohibited, as they could disturb the local fauna.
