Garden of nations in Torrevieja

The Parque de las Naciones, also known as the Garden of Nations or Europa Park, is one of the city's most iconic and visited green spaces, notable for its large central lake shaped like Europe, symbolizing the union between nations. Spanning over 38,000 m², this theme park combines nature, leisure, and culture, offering a children's play area with its famous dragon slide, an iguana terrarium, and the San Emigdio Chapel. It also hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year.
History and construction
Torrevieja's Parque de las Naciones (Park of Nations) emerged as an urban development project in the early 2000s with the aim of creating an emblematic green space for the city. Its construction began in 2002 on land previously unused and was developed in several phases until its official opening in 2004. The original design included a large central lake in the shape of Europe as a distinctive element, along with large green areas and recreational areas.
The project required significant earthworks to configure the terrain and create the 6,000 square meter artificial lake. An innovative hydraulic system connected to the municipal wastewater treatment plant was implemented, allowing treated wastewater to be used to fill the pond. This ecological approach was pioneering in the region and set a precedent for similar projects.
In the years following its opening, the park underwent several expansions and improvements. Between 2005 and 2010, the iguana terrarium was added, and the San Emigdio Chapel was relocated from its original location in Calvario Plaza. The 2010s brought major renovations, such as the modernization of the water system in 2015 and the updating of the children's areas in 2020. In 2024, 24 Ceiba Speciosa trees that had surrounded the park for 30 years were transplanted.
In July 2025, the Rotary Club of Torrevieja inaugurated the city's first accessible playground: an area within the Parque de las Naciones with donated playground equipment for children with and without disabilities, for an estimated value of 9,000€. This goal, which the Rotary Club has also shared with the Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs (APANEE), is a goal that is being shared by the Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs (APANEE).
Location and access
The Jardin de las Naciones is located in the heart of Torrevieja, in a well-connected and easily accessible area. Its exact location is bordered by some of the city's main thoroughfares, making it a landmark within the urban fabric. The park is bordered by the CV-90, the N-332 (the national highway that connects with Alicante and Murcia), Villa de Madrid Street, and the César Cánovas Girón ring road. This strategic location places it just a 15-minute walk from Torrevieja's historic center.
How to get there?
If you're in the center of Torrevieja, the best way to get to the park is on foot; you'll be there in just 10 minutes. The city bus is another good option; lines A2, B, C, DF, E, and G all stop at the station park, which is just 5 minutes from Parque de las Naciones. By car would be the last option, as parking around the park is difficult to find, especially during the summer months.
Accessibility
The park's design has been conceived to ensure universal access. All main paths are paved and have gentle inclines. The main entrance has a wide, well-signposted entrance for people with reduced mobility. Furthermore, the park's restrooms include accessible facilities.
Features and services
Torrevieja's Parque de las Naciones stands out for its impressive 6,000 m² artificial lake shaped like the European continent, fed by an innovative reclaimed water system. This central feature is surrounded by the flags of European countries, creating a unique thematic environment that combines education and leisure. The landscape design incorporates Mediterranean vegetation adapted to the local climate, with more than 500 trees and 2,000 shrubs providing natural shade.
The park offers a fully remodeled children's area for children with disabilities, featuring the famous dragon slide, play areas with safety flooring, and spaces for outdoor activities. Athletes have access to petanque and caliche facilities, where local championships are regularly held.
The cultural component is present in the Los Aljibes exhibition hall, which hosts temporary exhibits throughout the year, and the San Emigdio Chapel, a small religious temple relocated from the city center. The park's fauna includes ducks, swans, peacocks, and a terrarium with iguanas, which have become one of the main attractions for visitors.
Events and activities at the Parque de las Naciones
The Parque de las Naciones is an important center of cultural and social activity in Torrevieja, hosting events throughout the year. Among the highlights are the Patron Saint Festival in honor of San Emigdio, held every August. These festivities include a moving procession, open-air Masses in the park chapel, popular festivals with live music, and children's activities such as workshops and traditional games. The celebration, which pays tribute to Torrevieja's co-patron saint, known as a protector against earthquakes, turns the park into a lively meeting point.
Another important event is the Medieval Market, which is often held in the park, recreating the atmosphere of the Middle Ages with craft stalls, falconry displays, juggling shows, and traditional cuisine. The park also hosts cultural exhibitions in the Los Aljibes hall, where paintings, photography, ship modeling, and even themed fairs are presented, enriching the city's artistic offerings.
For families, there's a constant program of children's activities, such as storytelling and educational workshops, as well as evening festivals in the summer that liven up the warm Torrevieja nights. This variety of events consolidates the Parque de las Naciones as a lively and dynamic space within Torrevieja's cultural life.
Schedules and recommendations
The Parque de las Naciones is open every day of the year, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. in the summer months, allowing visitors to enjoy its facilities both in the morning and in the afternoon/evening. Admission is completely free, with no restrictions, making it accessible to all visitors.
If you plan to visit the park with your pet, it's important to remember that dogs must be kept on a leash, as birds and other loose animals could be affected. Furthermore, it's recommended not to feed the ducks, swans, and other park animals, as certain foods can harm their health. Furthermore, although the park offers cleaning services, it's essential to keep the area free of waste by using the available trash cans and containers.
