Los Balcones Park "Queen of Salt" in Torrevieja

Los Balcones Park, as it is known worldwide, although its real name is Reina de la Sal, is located on Avenida María Asunción in the Los Balcones residential area in Torrevieja (Alicante). This multipurpose space occupies 35,000 square meters and combines sports areas, children's areas, and natural spaces. It was built on an old promenade and stands out for its stepped design and wide variety of facilities for all audiences.
History and construction
The "Reina de la Sal" Balconies Park was born from an urban and social regeneration project promoted by Torrevieja City Council between 2013 and 2014. Its creation radically transformed an old, underused promenade in the Los Balcones development, turning it into a leisure and sports space for the entire community.
Developed in two phases, the first phase (2013) was implemented through the Mediterranean Employment Workshop VI, a program that combined training and employment for 38 unemployed people. With a budget of 1,005,410 € (60% financed by the Valencian Government), the sports and children's areas and the dog park were built.
In December 2014, the second phase was completed with the Mediterranean Employment Workshop VII, where 22 student workers added the viewing platform, skating rink, jogging track, and expanded the green areas. The park was officially opened in 2015.
The Reina de la Sal Park takes its name from the iconic Queens of Salt, a traditional figure linked to the cultural legacy of Torrevieja's salt flats. Beyond its recreational function, this project stood out for generating temporary employment for 60 unemployed people through training workshops, rehabilitating a degraded space in a densely populated residential area, and integrating pioneering facilities such as Torrevieja's first public sandpit and one of the largest dog parks in the region. Today, it remains a model of how training programs can transform the urban environment while benefiting the entire community.
